Brazil made their debut by defeating Turkey 2-1, in a match marked by a penalty for a foul outside the area suffered by Luizão, who fell inside the area, covering for South Korean referee Kim Young-joo. Rivaldo converted the spot-kick. The penalty should have been taken by Ronaldinho, but Rivaldo took responsibility.

In their second match, Brazil beat China, who were making their World Cup debut, 4-0.

Costa Rica 🇨🇷 2 - 5 🇧🇷 Brazil - June 13, 2002

In the third match, with Brazil having already qualified, Felipão spared many of his starters and the team went on to beat Costa Rica 5-2. By rotating the squad in this game, Felipão was able to use all the players he had at his disposal at the World Cup, with a total of 21 players used out of the 23 called up (only the reserve goalkeepers, Dida and Rogério Ceni, didn't take to the field).

In the Round of 16, Brazil beat Belgium 2-0. The controversial move was a disallowed goal by Marc Wilmots. From that game on, Juninho Paulista was replaced by Kleberson.

In the quarter-finals, a 2-1 victory over England, with one player less due to Ronaldinho Gaúcho's expulsion. The goal was scored by Ronaldinho, who denied that it was unintentional: "I had already noticed, when we looked at the videos of the other games, that their goalkeeper was always a bit early. So the possibility was there. Along with the luck, we ended up scoring that beautiful goal."

Germany 🇩🇪 0 - 2 🇧🇷 Brazil - June 30, 2002

In the final, Germany won 2-0 with two goals from Ronaldo. Germany were without Michael Ballack, who was suspended.
Curiously, despite the tradition and the record, this was the first meeting between the two teams in World Cups (Brazil had faced East Germany the only time it played in the tournament, in 1974, but never West Germany, to which the reunified country is considered heir).

For winning the title, each member of the coaching staff received a prize of US$100,000 from the CBF. From striker Ronaldo, the Cup's top scorer with eight goals, to masseur Jorge Luís Domingos, the "bicho" for the penta was the same. The five-time champions also received another R$104. 683.19 for their participation in CBF contracts with Globo, AmBev and Telemar, sponsors of the national team
