THE BRIAN MAY BAND
Tour: Back to the Light // Leg 2: North America (Part 1)
Venue: New Haven Coliseum
City: New Haven, Connecticut, USA
Date: March 6th, 1993
Note: Once again, thanks so much to @DryPaintDealerUndr for supplying this great footage from Brian's first solo tour. Go check out his channel!
Tonight’s show in New Haven brings us to the first recorded “opening act” set of the tour, as the Brian May band is once again opening Guns N’ Roses’ ‘Skin & Bones’ leg of their ‘Use Your Illusion’ tour (they had already opened for them on the first two shows of the leg, Austin and Birmingham). These shows would feature a drastically cut down setlist, with several songs being dropped.
Tonight’s show is pretty unique for the NA leg as it has three different sources, two audio ones and a video source, this upload will primarily focus on the video source, as it’s in pretty good quality, with a particularly great audio quality for the tour. Brian’s show is captured in full, and pretty clearly thanks to this (first generation copy of) audience video, whose filmer is still unknown (it was shared by Kingrue, who bought it from the filmer around 2001)
‘The Dark’ is noteworthy as you can actually hear the band warming up as the tape rings, which sounds quite unprofessional tbh but you do you Brian. ‘Back To The Light’ is a solid performance with some fantastic guitars, but last night’s rendition is still stronger (though Brian does go off with some excellent C5s on the outro). ‘Driven By You’ has some fantastic embellishments and Brian gives it a pretty confident delivery. ‘Tie Your Mother Down’ has Brian hitting the A4s decently but a bit more forcefully than last night, the guitars on the outro are pure flames though. ‘Love Token’ is played quite tightly, with a pretty fun breakdown in which Cathy gets tangled with her mic wires, ‘Too Much Love Will Kill You’ is sung quite passionately by Brian, who sings the choruses pretty well, adding a pretty gutsy run at the start of the second one and nailing the final chorus absolutely perfectly. ‘Now I’m Here’ has Brian joining in for the first A4 and a fantastic solo section. The solo spot is thankfully less boring than last night’s but still a far cry from the great older solos, at least we get ‘Chinese Torture’ which is always great. The ‘Resurrection’ suite opens with a pretty strong performance of the title track, with Brian hitting some great highs and some incredible guitar work is heard during the breaks. Cozy’s drum solo is pretty fantastic, and the ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ rock section is sung solidly, and the ‘Resurrection’ reprise features some nice guitars but Brian hesitates a bit with some of the words, he still nails the highs pretty well. ‘Hammer To Fall’ ends tonight’s show with a pretty fast tempo, strong A4s, a solid bridge (not as good as last night’s) and a pretty long outro where Brian lets out some fantastic guitar work, he takes a fall at the end of the song, just like Freddie did nine years ago in Hanover (of course this wasn't as severe).
