Music is Not Haram Says Jaliba Contradicting Imam Bakawsu Fofana's Previous Statement. “Jaliba Will Go To Hell.”

Jaliba Kuyateh, the renowned Gambian musician, has publicly responded to accusations made by Imam Bakawsu Fofana, who had previously claimed that music is haram (forbidden) in Islam.

In a recent interview on the VM Show, Kuyateh defended his music, stating that it does not promote immoral behavior and clarified that music, in itself, is not sinful.

He explained that historical evidence shows that music was enjoyed during the time of Prophet Muhammad, and that the Prophet’s wife was known to listen to and watch musicians perform, which, according to Kuyateh, shows that music is not inherently sinful.

Kuyateh had been previously criticized by Imam Fofana for his performances, with the imam suggesting that his music would lead him to hell and encouraged inappropriate mingling between men and women.

Additionally, Kuyateh shared that he faced harassment from another imam at the Bass Mosque, who publicly humiliated him during a Friday sermon, claiming that his late-night performances caused disturbances.

Kuyateh, however, stated that he did not respond directly to the imam but noted that his fans defended him against these accusations.

The artist clarified that his music aims to bring positivity and joy, and he emphasized that it can be enjoyed respectfully without promoting sinful behavior. He urged listeners to understand his intentions and hear his full response to the allegations.

This statement by Kuyateh counters earlier criticisms and opens up a broader conversation about the role of music in Islam, particularly in the context of its historical acceptance during the time of the Prophet.
