Freedom Gundam is a nuclear-powered mobile suit (MS) developed by ZAFT, based on data obtained from the Earth Alliance's early GAT-X series, which was stolen by ZAFT. Under the secret orders of Patrick Zala, the development plan was carried out in secret, and it rolled out alongside Justice Gundam on April 1, C.E. 71. On the same day, after being appointed as the Chairman of the PLANT Supreme Council, Patrick Zala named this suit "Freedom," symbolizing the motto of "striking the hammer of justice on the Naturals and achieving true freedom for Coordinators."
ZAFT completed the Freedom Gundam as a high-spec machine, taking into account combat against mobile suits from the Earth Alliance. Three major design bureaus that make up ZAFT's Integrated Design Bureau (the Heinrich Design Bureau, the Asimov Design Bureau, and the Clarke Design Bureau) jointly developed it, using the ZGMF-600 GuAIZ as the base. They also incorporated new technologies obtained from the G-weapons (mainly high-output generators, beam weapons, and Phase Shift armor). Although the GuAIZ was a high-performance machine during the design phase, some functions had to be omitted during mass production. Therefore, Freedom Gundam, which was planned as a one-off, decisive battle mobile suit along with Justice Gundam, was developed exactly as its creators envisioned. The high performance of Freedom Gundam was achieved by merging ZAFT’s latest technology with the technology from the G-weapons. The Freedom Gundam was also influenced by the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam, which could swap its Striker Packs to serve different purposes. However, unlike Strike Gundam, Freedom Gundam was designed to outperform it without the need for additional equipment. Freedom's primary mission was to be used in PLANT defense and to serve as a deterrent against enemy forces, though expeditionary missions were also part of its role when coordinating with its dedicated mothership, Eternal.
Freedom Gundam was designed to take on multiple enemies single-handedly across all combat environments. It has high adaptability and versatility, allowing it to transition to high-mobility aerial combat after re-entering the atmosphere. Its multi-lock-on system also gives it the ability to neutralize multiple enemies simultaneously with powerful firepower. Freedom Gundam possesses far greater firepower than any previous mobile suit, with its weaponry being unprecedented in C.E. military history. This makes it a formidable machine capable of influencing the outcome of battles on its own. Its performance in both attack and defense is exceptional, making it one of the strongest mobile suits of its time. Due to its advanced capabilities, it is also difficult to pilot. To fully maximize Freedom’s potential, the pilot must have excellent spatial awareness to assess battlefield conditions quickly, make rapid decisions, and execute complex maneuvers. This requires a pilot with extraordinary abilities, even among Coordinators.
The Freedom Gundam was heavily damaged during the "Battle of Jachin Due," a critical final conflict in Gundam SEED. After this battle, the remains of the Freedom Gundam were secretly recovered by the Orb Union. It was then repaired and kept hidden until its later deployment. The "Battle of Jachin Due" was a large-scale space battle, central to the war between ZAFT and the Earth Alliance, where the Three Ships Alliance intervened to stop both sides from deploying destructive weapons
