Artist statement. Hui. I like to make art because it's interesting and I love art. I find watercolour easy to use. I find landscapes of mountains interesting. I use the drawing videos to assist me. When I make art, I feel comfortable. Artworks by Hui. One wall holds a collection of nine watercolour pieces, all listed as untitled 1 through nine. Seven of these are A4 sized. The remaining two are A3. Each piece is an example of traditional Chinese art. Some depicting landscapes, others showing close-up images of several birds. In one painting, a black and white landscape features an old gnarled tree in the foreground with one branch stretching out to the right from the thin bent trunk. In the background, mountains reach up into the sky and birds flit about. Between the tree and mountains sits a lake with a small fishing boat carrying a solitary fisherman. They wear a bamboo hat and hold a fishing rod out from the boat. Another painting shows a close-up scene of small tree branches covered in little colourful leaves and flowers. The branches are very thin, and on one a tiny bird perches, its feathers blue and yellow. Another similar bird flies upwards towards its perch on a branch closer to the viewer. A third painting depicts a small village from afar. The sky is pale blue and the grass below is green. In between a line of buildings slightly obscured by scattered vegetation, suggests a line in the landscape, a road perhaps. A fourth painting again shows a landscape centered upon a lake. In the foreground, a small outcrop of rock with some vegetation peeking out from behind the boulders. The background is dramatic with towering mountains sweeping up from the edge of the lake, full of dark colours. Under these mountains, a small village fronting onto the lake with a road leading up the hill behind into the wilderness beyond. Two small boats, each holding a single figure of a person, seemed to be meeting and acknowledging one another.
