Artist Statement, Linda Fry.
Linda is a Melbourne-based visual artist who holds a Diploma of Visual Arts from Victoria University. Over the past two decades, she has exhibited widely in local galleries and artist-run spaces, establishing a strong presence within the community. In 2024, she was awarded the mixed media Queenscliff Art Prize.
Working across drawing, painting and collage, Linda creates expressionistic portraits, still life, seascapes, and interior scenes. She identifies as an expressionist-naive artist, guided by an intuitive and emotive approach to image-making. Deeply inspired by the life and work of Frida Kahlo, Linda draws on Kahlo’s fearless self-expression and raw emotional honesty to inform her own practice. Her work is marked by bold forms, dynamic compositions, and a raw sensitivity to subject and medium.
Linda has 3 works as part of In Bloom.
‘Freda Khalo’ by Linda Fry acrylic, glitter paint, colour pencils, 50 x 50 cm.
This painting portrays a woman with a strong and unique appearance, set in a lush, garden-like environment filled with flowers, trees, and a whimsical orange cat.
Dominating the centre of the image is the woman, with delicately painted facial features: almond-shaped brown eyes, full rosy cheeks, and red lips. Her eyebrows are thick and nearly connected, suggesting a distinct and recognizable style. Her hair is pulled back into an intricate black bun topped with bright red roses.
Her attire includes extravagant jewellery: oversized, flower-shaped earrings and a detailed necklace with a prominent gold pendant. She is dressed in a rich purple top complemented by a dark shawl. To her right, a small, alert orange cat with exaggerated, expressive eyes perches on her shoulder, adding an element of charm.
The backdrop is a profusion of greenery: a tree with blue blossoms on the left, various flowers spread across the scene, and floating red hearts that add a whimsical touch. The sky is a mix of blues and greens, dotted with flying birds and more colourful flowers, contributing to the painting’s lively and joyful atmosphere.
‘Golden Table’ by Linda Fry, colour pencils on black A3 paper in portrait orientation.
The illustration features a vibrant setup of objects arranged on a decorated table. At the centre of this image is an oval-shaped, golden-yellow table with elegant, curving legs. Positioned centrally on the table is a tall, translucent blue vase filled with a generous bouquet of flowers in shades of purple and magenta, which fan out dramatically, creating a sense of movement. Nestled near the vase are two round, green apples and a few spherical, brown onions, arranged casually. A purple glass sits to the right, its soft hue adding a subtle accent. Below, another piece of furniture is lightly sketched in white, suggesting a bench or side table with a textured surface. The combination of these elements against the black background highlights the vibrant hues and intricate designs, enhancing the visual complexity of the scene.
‘The Fern Table’ by Linda Fry, acrylic and watercolour on A3 paper.
This mixed-media work captures a structure composed of vibrant colours, symmetrical patterns and a fusion of geometric and natural elements. Dominating the lower section of the image, large green leaves spread out like a fan from a central point, reminiscent of a plant or tree. Above these leaves, a flat platform with a repeating, triangular pattern in green and black extends horizontally. Rising vertically from this platform are several slender purple columns, which support a circular, red structure that cradles a small black, chalice-like object at its centre. The background features wispy, fern-like fronds that add a lush visual texture and extend outwards, framing the central structure. Topping off the composition, an aqua blue globe-like shape is capped with a yellow and green hollow dome at its peak. The intricate melding of these elements suggests both natural and architectural influences.
