The sanggumay orchids (Dendrobium anosmum) on campus are blooming! Also called the purple rain orchid for its characteristic cascade of pink-purple blooms, it is native to the Philippines and other tropical Asian countries. As with many orchids, the sanggumay is a very popular ornamental plant and can commonly be found in gardens and parks, but their natural habitat is mountainside forests where they are often poached for selling in the lowlands.
Reportedly, the sanggumay derives its name from two Tagalog words – sangsang, which means strong (usually bad) odor, and umay, which means tiresome – referring to its love-it-or-hate-it odor. More flattering descriptions of its perfume indicate it is close to the smell of raspberries or bubblegum, while some claim it smells like cough syrup. Whichever the case, its fragrance – strongest during the evenings and early mornings – is meant to attract pollinators like butterflies, moths, carpenter bees, and even these flower flies!
These flowers were photographed in front of the Arrupe International Residences (behind the LS swimming pool). If you pass by the area, try to take a sniff and judge the scent for yourself!
