Here it is, 14 months in the making and thanks to 300+ strong workforce. 400,000+ work hours and (in the end) 300kg of explosives. Before you press play, understand that each stack at Hazelwood was structurally compromised and well past it’s design life. We considered every method imaginable and explosive demolition – in one event – was the safest, by a long way! We picked this time of year and this exact day for a reason too. Dust suppression was critical and the wind and weather conditions were ideal. We invested more than $550k in purpose built measures and while they may not look like much up against the sheer size and scale of Hazelwood - when combined with the wind and weather - they worked. More than 125 dust and asbestos air monitors were located throughout the site and along the mine boundary. None of them recorded a reading above regulatory limits – none! On top of that, an EPA Air Quality Monitoring Station located at Morwell South never budged from a rating of GOOD before, during or after the blasts. If you can, take time to read the credits after our short film. Success, as they say, has many parents and we’ve tried to thank everyone who played their part. Enjoy!
