Montessori Bells Presentations | Auditory Sense Activity (AMI Approach)

Direct Purpose:
Refinement of the Auditory sense in relation to pitch
Age: 3-6

Material:
2 series of bells ranging from Middle C to high C
1 series has black and white stands which correspond to the black and white keys of a piano. The other series has stands of natural varnished wood.
Two green boards with black and white rectangles resembling a piano keyboard. The black and white bells go on the green part behind the corresponding black and whit rectangles. The brown bells are placed on the black and white rectangles.
A wooden mallet. Damper: to quite the bells
Special shelf which is about 21 cm from the floor.

This material should be placed in the centre of a classroom to be seen (against the wall, so the child can work in the right sequence)
When handle the bell, never touch the metal part (the dome)
The white bells is the control of error, never move them
We work with the brown balls
The black bells: just like the black keys in the piano, place them with the white ones
The corresponding brown bells (same tone with the black ones)
Chromatic scale: the sound when we put the black and white together , 13 white and black bells. (8 white bells)
Diatonic Scale: 8 bells (7 notes), because the first and the last one is C

Indirect Purpose:
Indirect preparation for music
Indirect preparation for writing because of the pincher grip
