I was originally going to test the Lezyne 1400 lumens, the Bookman 1500 lumens, and a KOM Cycling 1000 lumens with a really useful hinge feature that I saw at KOM Cycling's Sea Otter 2025 booth. I never got the KOM Cycling light mailed for testing. If it shows up, I'll do a separate review. I have a feeling that'll be good because I like the functionality where it tilts down for safety to stay out of people's view, and from what I saw on their website, the mounting looks solid.
On the lights that I tried, the Bookman is a super nice light, but it fell every time I used it. And while it was bright, people were blinded and complained. I liked the light, hated the mount. And for the Lezyne, solid performer, but the rubber mount buckle is cumbersome.
I haven't yet found the perfect accessory light. I'm intrigued by KOM CYCLING's light. It's plenty bright. But what really grabs my attention is KOM's pivot functionality, and what looks like a legitimate mount; neither Bookman nor Lezyne delivered on those two items.
Lezyne Macro Drive 1400+ and the Bookman Volume 1500:
Power & Runtime
Lezyne Macro Drive 1400+:
1400 lumens maximum output
Claimed 3-hour runtime on peak output, but real-world testing shows about 2.5 hours before significant dimming
5200mAh built-in battery
Bookman Volume 1500:
1500 lumens maximum output
Claimed 3-hour runtime, but testing showed about 2.5 hours before abrupt cutoff without warning
4000mAh replaceable 21700 battery
Build Quality & Design
Lezyne:
CNC-machined aluminum construction with cooling fins for heat dissipation
230g weight, IPX7 waterproof rating (total immersion)
Tri-Focus Optics for optimized beam pattern
Bookman:
Sleek curved aluminum body without cooling fins, 202g weight
IPX5 water resistance (spray protection, not submersion)
Scandinavian design-led aesthetics with clean lines
User Interface & Controls
Lezyne:
Single button operation with seven different output modes
"Race Mode" accessed with 5-second button press - toggles quickly between 1400 and 450 lumens
Standard cycling through modes
Bookman:
Top button for on/off and solid/flashing toggle, plus large rotary "Power Wheel" on the side
Patent-pending brightness knob allows real-time adjustment without cycling through modes
10 total modes (5 constant, 5 flashing)
Mounting Systems
Lezyne:
Integrated rubber strap mount - secure but requires strapping/unstrapping each time for removal
Users frequently complain about the tedious mounting system for daily use
Bookman:
Garmin-style quarter-turn mount - extremely easy to remove for security but less stable on rough terrain
Perfect for commuting where you want to easily pocket the light, but not ideal for mountain biking due to less secure connection
Charging & Battery
Lezyne:
USB-C charging port behind sturdy rubber bung, 2A+ fast charging
Compatible with Infinite Light Power Pack+ for extended runtime
Fixed internal battery
Bookman:
USB-C charging with pass-through capability (can charge while in use)
Replaceable battery system - you can buy spare 21700 batteries for extended rides or replace when battery degrades
3-hour charge time
Beam Pattern & Performance
Lezyne:
Tri-Focus Optics with three LEDs providing good coverage and beam pattern
Excellent heat management - no overheating issues even on maximum setting
Bookman:
Single LED design with "dialed optics" despite the simple construction
Smooth curved design without cooling fins may limit sustained high-power operation
Price
Lezyne: $99.99
Bookman: $149 / £130 / €149
Bottom Line
Choose Lezyne if you want:
Better value ($50 less)
Superior weather protection (IPX7 vs IPX5)
More rugged construction with better heat management
"Race Mode" for quick power switching
Choose Bookman if you want:
Slightly higher peak output (1500 vs 1400 lumens)
Revolutionary rotary brightness control
Easy daily removal for commuting/security
Replaceable battery system for longevity
More stylish, minimalist design
The Lezyne is the better choice for serious trail riding and harsh conditions, while the Bookman excels for urban cycling where convenience and style matter most.
