We started the second leg of our Jharkhand food series with a road trip food experience from Ranchi to Bishunpur along with our host Kumar Abhishek Oraon, co-founder of Open Farm. Open Farm has been working closely with local communities to highlight Jharkhand’s culinary and cultural richness.
Our first stop was at Vishnu Chaat in Sisai, Gumla, where we tried an interesting combination of dhuska samosa chaat. We loved the zesty flavours of the curry and chutney served over dhuska and samosa.
From there we went to Sonu Chaat, also in Sisai, Gumla, where we sampled freshly fried dhuska, singhara with a soft potato filling, chana dal bhajiya and crispy jalebi. Sonu ji had started his shop during Covid and has been serving ever since, preparing snacks in small batches as orders come in. One unique customisation here is a dhuska dipped in sugar syrup.
A short break followed at a small chai ki dukan in Sisai along with a seet and tangy nimbu chai before we continued towards Bishunpur Bazar.
By the time we arrived, the market was buzzing with activity. We came across different varieties of khukri mushrooms, women selling custard apples, and stalls offering homemade snacks like gulgula, lakhto, sev boondi, and nimki, vegetables, daily objects etc.
To wrap up the journey, we stopped at a handia shop in the bazaar to taste the traditional rice-based drink and learn about its cultural and social significance in the region.
This road trip beautifully captured the everyday flavours of Jharkhand, deeply rooted in its people and traditions.
