What looks like a harmless log of 𝗧𝗼, 𝗙𝗿𝗼𝗺, 𝗦𝘂𝗯𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁, 𝗗𝗮𝘁𝗲 can actually map an employee’s behavior, network, and even performance.
📌 For the first time, the Italian Garante applied its 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗚𝘂𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 on metadata of employees' emails:
⏳ Retention capped at 𝟮𝟭 𝗱𝗮𝘆𝘀
📝 Longer retention requires 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗮𝗯𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹
❌ Regione Lombardia stored logs for 𝟭𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 — and got fined €𝟱𝟬,𝟬𝟬𝟬
💡 The key takeaway? 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝘂𝗻𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱. Metadata is now treated as full-fledged personal data under GDPR and Italian labor law.
➡️ Employers must rethink retention policies, run 𝗗𝗣𝗜𝗔𝘀, and handle metadata as carefully as any other 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮.
🎬 Watch the video below for the breakdown.
What do you think — will this ruling push companies across Europe to finally treat metadata with the same seriousness as content?
