Episode 2: Remote Work. Security Tips for Working From Home

Remote work security is no joke. Working from home or from a beach bar in Bali makes you more exposed to cyberattacks. Follow the safety tips for working from home, demonstrated by Professor, Cat, and Spider in the second episode of Cybersecuritoons.

We’ll cover the basics of remote work cybersecurity, like separate work devices and how to protect them, Wi-Fi security, and the Clean Desk Rule. Below is the Professor’s working-from-home safety checklist.

“Ah, remote work! When you don't have to go to the office and can work from wherever you like! However, working from all these amazing places makes you more exposed to cyberattacks.

So to protect your own and your company's data, don’t use your personal devices for work. Your employer likely gave you a separate laptop. Be sure to keep all software on it up-to-date.Set a reliable password on your work laptop and always lock it before stepping away, even if it’s for a few seconds.

Don’t share your work device with family or friends. Keep your work and personal emails separate. And never use your personal email for work-related conversations.

Keep your USB drives separate, too. Don’t connect personal drives to work computers or use them to store corporate data.

Never download pirated software or content onto work devices.

Don’t connect to public Wi-Fi networks — they aren’t safe. Use a VPN if you have to connect to public Wi-Fi.

Report all lost or stolen devices to your company's IT. Never leave your devices unattended. Like in the backseat of a taxi or in a hotel lobby.

Finally, follow the “Clean Desk Rule.” Whenever you leave your desk, clean up and lock up any documents that you had there.

If you’re smart about remote work, cybercriminals stand no chance!”
