It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was abandoned after an uprising by the Greek population against the Ottoman rule in 1770.
It was the capital of Laconia county, prior to the establishment of the modern Sparta in 1834, and was considered to be the premier renaissance town in Greece, prior to it's destruction.
Established in 1240 by the Frankish the town rapidly grew around the castle and became an incredible power in the region, with learning and scholarly activities. Rulers from the town when on to become kings in the Holy Roman Empire until the Ottomans took control in about 1450.
This is a site that you must visit if you are in the area, visiting Sparta, or travelling down to the Southern Peloponnese, Kalamata or the Mani Peninsula.
Combined with Sparta it would also be a great day trip from Athens or Kalamata, if you are driving, or able to get a coach.
