Springsteen originally wrote the song for his oldest son, Evan Springsteen, between 1998 and 2001 after reading the Harry Potter books to his children. He offered the song to Chris Columbus, however, Warner Bros. rejected the song due to J. K. Rowling's contract stipulation that no commercial songs could be used in the Harry Potter films. A promotional CD was given to top executives at Columbia Records, with the song being titled "Song for Harry Potter."
