In 1604, Sweelinck was sent by the city of Amsterdam to buy a double-manual transposing harpsichord from the Ruckers in Antwerp. Once back in Amsterdam, Pieter Izaakszoon was commissioned to decorate the instrument, which stood in the Amsterdam city hall and was used by Sweelinck to provide entertainment for city banquets. The instrument is long lost, but the lid (shown here) still exists in the collection of the Rijksmuseum.
Inscription on the lid:
‘Exclusam hesperia perituram Hispane putasti Me? Frustra: nam cura Dei mihi pandit ad Afros Primo iter, atque Indos, et qua patet extima China Quaque etiam priscis non cognitus Orbis in Orbe. Perge favere Deus, daque his agnoscere Christum’ (Do you imagine that, for the care of God first opened to me the way to the Africans, and the Indians, and shows me alien China, a world within the world, which was not even known to the ancients. Go forth with God's blessing, and give these (nations) the knowledge of Christ.)
