In this video we'll go over how to replace the alternator (sometimes referred to as a generator) on a late model Chevrolet Cavalier or Pontiac Sunfire with a new ACDelco part. The vehicle illustrated is a 2004 Chevy Cavalier with the 2.2L Ecotec engine (RPO L61), which has started having the red battery symbol illuminating intermittently on the instrument cluster. This tell-tale indicates a problem which is almost always due to either a bad alternator, bad battery, or defective wiring in between them (in that order of likelihood).
This procedure directly applies to the 2003, 2004, and 2005 model years. It may also apply to earlier years but only if using the 2.2L Ecotec engine, regular production option (RPO) L61 as the alternator mounting layout would have been in the same position (e.g., 2002 Chevy Cavalier). Note that prior to 2003 GM had two 2.2L engine flavors, you can tell the difference by looking for the Ecotec name label on top of the L61 type.
The alternator for the 2003 2004 and 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier and Pontiac Sunfire with the 2.2L Ecotec engine is GM 88864453 or ACDelco 334-1468A. This GM number supersedes the now discontinued GM 19134461.
