Red Pike, High Stile and High Crag from Buttermere in the Lake District May 2022

James and I set off from the NT Car Park in Buttermere intending to climb these three peaks along with Haystacks and Fleetwith Pike. Initially the weather was very favourable but after a coffee stop at Bleaberry Tarn conditions deteriorated and we experienced strong winds, heavy rain, mist and poor visibility. So when we reached Scarth Gap we bailed out and descended to Buttermere, wind-swept and a bit wet.
On it's own, Red Pike is a tough one from the saddle above Bleaberry Tarn. The path becomes scree and there is some hands on scrambling so getting to the top is a big achievement. The ridge walking to High Stile and High Crag isn't too bad but we didn't get the benefit of the spectacular views. However, the hardest part of this hike was the descent from High Crag. Very soon we came to a decision point where straight on was loose scree and left was a stepped path. We chose left and the steps were very good but in the rain they were incredibly slippery and I fell backwards and sideways many times.
So we were relieved when we got to Scarth Gap. At the time, the only logical decision was to bail out and head for Buttermere, yet soon the weather was to clear and warm up! However, we really enjoyed the hike despite the weather and James got to do his first three Wainwrights.
