Marriage in ancient Yorùbá times was not about the couple really, or the food, Aṣọ ẹbí , Souvenirs or colours and themes. There were no bridal squads or make up artistes. It was simply the institution of family ties... a union between two families. There was really no privacy... when you had an Alárinà (mediator) who conveyed messages between spouses and even their families.
The Bridal clothing was however elaborate even for their time. Brides wore Aṣọ Òkè (a.k.a. Òfì) and were adorned in beautiful Ìlẹ̀kẹ̀ (beads)
There were no marriage lists from the Bride's parents, the Groom's family simply brought gift items, most of which will be used for prayers during the marriage rites.
Both families, and the gods must agree before a marriage could go on, although some couples sometimes eloped or did the àsànte when they wanted to have their way by all means.
Pleas explore with me from Marriage in ancient Yoruba Land, from the initiation of courtship to the ever so eventful wedding night!
