Gojuon:
The standard Gojuon chart includes the basic kana characters, such as:
• Vowels: あ (a), い (i), う (u), え (e), お (o)
• Consonant rows: か (ka), さ (sa), た (ta), な (na), は (ha), ま (ma), や (ya), ら (ra), わ (wa)
• The standalone moraic nasal: ん (n)
Dakuon & Handakuon:
Adding a diacritic mark called a dakuten, which looks like two small dots (") to the upper right of a kana character. A dakuten are from the ka, sa, ta, and ha rows.
The phonetic shift is as follows:
• ka (か) row becomes ga (が)
• sa (さ) row becomes za (ざ)
• ta (た) row becomes da (だ)
• ha (は) row becomes ba (ば)
Adding a handakuten a small circle, to the upper right of a kana character.
This is only used for the ha row.
• ha (は) row becomes pa (ぱ)
Yōon:
“Contracted Sounds" in Japanese. A kana from the "i" column with a smaller version of one of the three y kana: ゃ (ya), ゅ (yu), or ょ (yo).
For example:
• き (ki) + ゃ (small ya) = きゃ (kya)
• し (shi) + ゅ (small yu) = しゅ (shu)
• ひ (hi) + ょ (small yo) = ひょ (hyo)
Yōon can also be formed with characters that have a dakuten or handakuten, such as:
• ぎ (gi) + ゅ (small yu) = ぎゅ (gyu)
• ぴ (pi) + ゃ (small ya) = ぴゃ (pya)
