Why did Jourdan let go? Side headlock vs Bulldog choke

Last year we critiqued the many flaws in Master Wong’s rear naked choke videos. In order to demonstrate how a single cookie cutter solution won’t solve a complex and dynamic problem (like not knowing how to grapple, for example) I had several of my students take turns repeatedly applying the rear naked choke while I attempted to escape, each time each of us using different techniques and strategies, and each time yielding different results.
In one of these goes, Jourdan Chow dragged me to the ground to prevent a conventional standing escape and he transitioned to a bulldog choke attempt. When Jourdan realized his choke was not on, he began to transition to a different position to prevent me from capitalizing on what had become a side headlock.
Here’s why the side headlock (aka: the schoolyard bully headlock) is more dangerous for you than to your opponent and why you should never ever use it. We’ll also teach you how to do the bulldog choke correctly, and a bunch of ways to exploit the side headlock if your opponent is dumb enough to try one.
