On March 18, 1654 in Pereiaslav hetman of Ukraine Bohdan Khmelnytskyi and tsar of Moskovia Alexei Mikhailovich signed the agreement about millitary alliance and protectorate.

Khmelnytskyi counted on the support of another Orthodox Cristian state in the struggle for Ukraine's independence. But as a result, for a little more than 100 years, russia destroyed the Ukrainian Hetmanate, the majority of the population was enslaved.

russia has always insisted and continues to insist that this agreement was an act of reunification - in fact, the agreement was terminated in 2 years, because by concluding a separate peace with the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, russia violated the terms of "Pereiaslav agreement". Specific content of the agreement remains unknown, there is a theory about the deliberate concealment or destruction of the text of the agreement by russia.

In 1845 Taras Shevchenko, after visiting the ruins of church in Subotiv village, where Bohdan Khmelnytskyi was buried, wrote poem "In the village of Subotiv".

Despite the ambiguous decision on the alliance with Moscowia, which eventually led to the liquidation of the Ukrainian Hetmanate, Bohdan Khmelnytskyi remains a great personality in the history of Ukraine as a father of the Ukrainian nation and founder of the first independent national state.
