Haisai... My name is Itosu Ankō
I was born in 1831 in Gibo Village, Shuri, the castle capital city of the Ryukyu Kingdom. I lived 84 years and passed away in 1915. As a government official, I served under King Shō Tai during a turbulent time in our history, witnessing firsthand the dissolution of the Ryukyuan monarchy and the forced integration of our islands into the expanding Japanese state.
In the years that followed, I recognized the growing influence of Japanese institutions—especially law enforcement, the military, and public education. I saw an opportunity: if Okinawa’s classical fighting tradition could also be restructured, as was wrestling [Judo] and swordsmanship [Kendo] on the mainland—then, in principle, simplified kata could also similarly preserve our heritage, and promote the health, discipline, and character of our youth. This adaptation, begun in 1905 and formalized in my 1908 letter to Japan’s Ministry of Education and Department of War, marked the beginning of Karate’s entrance into the school system.
What followed exceeded anything I could have imagined. Karate spread beyond Okinawa, beyond Japan, and eventually around the world.
Once a secret art taught behind closed doors, it became a global system of physical education, self-discipline, and character development. Karate is now celebrated as a means to improve life by conditioning the body, cultivating the mind, and nurturing the spirit. That it began here, in Okinawa, is a legacy I hold with deep humility.
Karate is Okinawa's gift to the world—a quiet contribution to peace through discipline and self-mastery.
