Encaustic painting is a deeply satisfying, solitary process. It began 12 years ago, and has evolved into a deep love of photo-encaustic painting. Taking an image, altering it a bit with software, then painting up, from the unfocused image, until 20, 30, sometimes 40 or more layers are added, and fused with a blowtorch. Nature is my muse. Natural textures draw me in; driftwood, pebbles, veins of leaves, lichen on trees. My commission work has fit well with nature-inspired images. My studio, on the shores of a canal, is serene and messy. While painting with warm wax, I marvel at the precision held in direct tension with imprecision. I scrape, add, melt, then add more: the process is very fluid, inspired, and wholly satisfying at this stage of my life. Creating is the antidote to any of life's tugging.
