“Three Miles Down”:
In August 2019, three experienced hikers—Evan, his best friend Nate, and Nate’s girlfriend Marissa—set out on a three-day backpacking trip through Washington’s remote North Cascades. Confident in their abilities, they planned to complete a 20-mile loop, expecting adventure and scenic views. The first day unfolds perfectly, full of laughter, photographs, and campfire meals beside a mountain creek. But on the second day, everything changes.
As they begin a grueling ascent toward a mountain pass, dark clouds gather, and a brutal storm descends. During a treacherous descent along a narrow cliffside trail, Nate slips and nearly falls to his death. Though Evan and Marissa manage to save him, he suffers a serious ankle injury. With no cell service, soaked gear, and night approaching, the group is forced to make a desperate push for an old ranger cabin that may or may not still exist.
What follows is a harrowing ordeal of survival. Navigating washed-out trails and fading light, fear and panic begin to take hold. When they finally reach the ranger cabin, it’s abandoned and locked. Breaking in for shelter, they spend a sleepless night listening to the storm rage outside, haunted by the feeling of isolation and unseen eyes in the darkness.
With Nate’s injury worsening and no working radio, they begin a painful, exhausting journey back toward the main trail at dawn. Just as hope begins to fail, they are found by a ranger and driven to safety. Nate will recover—but the emotional scars run deeper.
As Evan reflects in the safety of the ranger station, he realizes the wilderness doesn’t need to be malevolent to be deadly. It doesn’t punish or protect—it simply exists. One wrong turn, one misstep, and it can take everything.
"The Clearing":
A seasoned backpacker returns to their favorite secluded campsite deep in the mountains for a peaceful solo trip, only to discover unsettling signs that someone has been living there—trash, animal bones, and a torn-open bag filled with scattered belongings. Among the debris is a water-damaged notebook belonging to a man named John, whose rambling entries reveal he’s an escaped fugitive hiding out in the wilderness. As night falls, strange noises surround the camp, and the narrator realizes they may not be alone. Haunted by footsteps in the dark and the disturbing contents of the notebook, they flee at dawn, carrying the weight of what they found—and what might still be out there.
The mountains, once a place of solace, are no longer safe. And some secrets are better left undiscovered.
"The Clubhouse":
After months of city life, the narrator returns to a secluded campsite deep in the forest—a personal sanctuary first introduced by a friend years earlier. The journey begins peacefully, with clear skies and a familiar trail leading to cherished memories. But upon arrival, the scene is anything but welcoming. The campsite is trashed and reeks of decay. Strange signs suggest someone had been living there—animal carcasses, bullet-riddled cans, and the unsettling remnants of desperate survival.
Among the debris, the narrator discovers a buried cooler filled with rotting meat and a moldy trash bag containing a warped notebook. The journal reveals the story of a fugitive who fled into the wilderness to avoid capture, documenting his descent into isolation and paranoia. He speaks of danger, both natural and imagined—or possibly real—claiming someone, or something, is watching him. His final entry hints at surrender, but no resolution is given.
Unnerved yet compelled, the narrator searches for the fugitive’s mysterious “clubhouse,” an abandoned hideout deep in the woods, but finds nothing. Haunted by the discovery, they return home with the journal, choosing not to report it—perhaps out of fear, or the unsettling sense that some secrets should remain hidden.
The story ends with a lingering unease: the man’s fate unknown, the forest still watching, and the possibility that not all who disappear into the woods are meant to be found.
