Roughly 9,500 truck drivers sidelined as DOT ramps up English-language enforcement

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) says roughly 9,500 commercial truck drivers have been placed out of service this year for failing to meet federal English-language proficiency requirements, as the agency ramps up enforcement of a rule that has been on the books for decades.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy first announced the figure on Wednesday in a post on X, framing the crackdown as a highway-safety measure.

Duffy then expanded on that announcement Friday during a news conference, arguing that English proficiency is critical during crashes and roadside emergencies.

“If there is a crash, you have to be able to communicate with law enforcement,” Duffy said. “What’s on your rig? Where are you going? There’s basic information that law enforcement needs or first responders need when there’s crashes on American roadways. They also have to understand American roadway signs. It’s a safety issue.”
