Battery Energy Storage Placement in Unbalanced Distribution Network

Abstract:
This talk focuses on the impacts of battery utilization in distribution networks. The placement of battery energy storage systems determines whether their capabilities can be fully exploited. As such, the talk will then focus more on battery placement objectives and approaches. Most battery placement approaches are based on assuming a balanced network model while practical distribution networks are essentially unbalanced. The remainder of the talk will be on discussing a more comprehensive battery placement optimization model which will also suit the unbalanced distribution networks while considering the time-varying load and renewable profiles as well as electricity prices. The impact of employing such more comprehensive methods will be then demonstrated on a real Australian distribution network of high photovoltaic penetrations.
Bio:
A/Professor Xiangjing Su received his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Curtin University in 2015, under the China Scholarship Council program. He joined the Shanghai University of Electric Power (SUEP) and then was selected into the Shanghai 'Pujiang Talent Program' in 2017. Su is currently with the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications, University of New South Wales as a Visiting Fellow, supported by the SUEP 'Academic Star' program. His main research interests include optimal planning and operation of active distribution networks and artificial intelligence applications in offshore wind farms. He has published more than 40 research papers. He was the Technical Program Chair for the 2019 9th International Conference on Power and Energy Systems and is the Subject Track Chair for the coming International Conference on Smart Grids and Energy Systems 2020. He is currently an IEEE Senior Member, guest editor for IET Generation, Transmission & Distribution. In the past five years, he has secured around 2.4 Million RMB research funding from government and industry.
