Considering the unsual cold weather we are experiencing now in NY, here is a medical condition caused by cold:
Cold Panniculitis – ever heard of it? It’s an inflammatory condition in your subcutaneous fat caused by cold exposure, often appearing as red, firm bumps or patches on the skin. Here’s where it gets more interesting: if you carry a Factor V Leiden mutation (an inherited condition that makes your blood more prone to clotting), you could be dealing with a higher-risk scenario.
Virchow’s Triad (Rudolf Virchow, physician-scientist & prominent fighter against Antisemitism)
1. Endothelial Injury – Damage to the vessel lining.
2. Stasis of Blood Flow – Sluggish blood flow.
3. Hypercoagulability – Blood that clots too easily.
Factor V Leiden lands squarely in the hypercoagulability category. When combined with any injury or slowed blood flow (like from cold-induced changes), it sets the stage for potential clotting issues.
What To Do?
Stay Warm: Minimize prolonged cold exposure if you’re at risk.
Watch for Changes: Look out for persistent redness or lumps that don’t go away.
Stay Informed & Consult a Pro: If you suspect thrombophilia or have Factor V Leiden, regular check-ups are key.
Healthy Habits: Exercise, hydration, and balanced nutrition support overall blood flow and reduce clot risk.
Topical therapy- Troxevasin gel (flavenoid works as an angioprotector) or heparin gel (helps reduce clots and is used internally for Factor 5 Leiden mutation)
