The barn was quiet except for the soft sound of a child’s sobs, fragile and frightened, echoing through the wooden beams. A weary man stepped inside, boots heavy with dust from the trail, his life carved by years of loss he never spoke about. He paused when he saw her—a small girl curled on the straw, tears streaking her dirt-smudged face, shoulders shaking as she tried to be brave.
He knelt slowly, lowering himself to her level, his voice instinctively gentle.
“Don’t cry, little one…”
She looked up.
