Thirteen weeks into the project, the students in Kalamazoo Valley Community College's Mach 282 were given a task — design and build a wind turbine. A few students knew welding. Some had an electrical background. One or two understood the computer-aided design software.
On May 3, 2010, the last day of class, the class members gathered to erect the turbine, a sleek vertical helix, that they design, engineered and built.
The students have not become master electricians or draftsmen, but they have learned the skills needed to take a design from concept to construction.
The students have high hopes for wind energy.
"I think Michigan needs to take the initiative or lead if you will in manufacturing renewable energy," says student Zach Deming. "We have all the facilities basically already from the automotive industry. People are looking and willing to do the jobs. It's real close."
