Schubert's String Quintet in C Major, D. 956 is one of those cosmic masterpieces that's so special that just about everyone gives it their best effort. So instead of rushing through a stack of two or three dozen excellent versions and splitting hairs over them, I offer a purely personal selection of my favorite half-dozen recordings.
