Dr V Ramanathan from IIT BHU reveals groundbreaking insights about ancient Indian chemistry and material science through systematic analysis of Sanskrit texts. Discover sophisticated metallurgical processes, chemical apparatus designs, and scientific methodologies that predate modern chemistry by centuries. Dr Ramanathan demonstrates how texts like Rasarnava and Rasaratna Samuchaya contain detailed descriptions of laboratory setups, distillation processes, and zinc extraction techniques while exposing misconceptions about Indian scientific heritage. Essential viewing for scholars, scientists, and anyone seeking authentic understanding of India's scientific legacy.
Key Points
Vedic corpus analysis revealing advanced metallurgical knowledge from Taittiriya Samhita
Philosophical foundations of Indian science through Nyaya, Sankhya, and Vaiseshika systems
Detailed examination of medieval chemistry texts and laboratory descriptions
Archaeological evidence supporting textual claims about ancient scientific practices
Concepts explored
Ancient Indian chemistry, Sanskrit scientific texts, Rasarnava analysis, metallurgy history, Ayurvedic pharmacology, Arthashastra material science, zinc extraction techniques, flame test descriptions, electrochemical series
About The Speaker:
Dr. V Ramanathan is an Assistant Professor in IITBHU, Varanasi. He is a physical chemist, trained in Laser spectroscopy, Raman Spectroscopy and computational chemistry. After his PhD from IIT Kanpur, he has postdoctoral experience in Seoul (South Korea), Basel (Switzerland) and Stuttgart (Germany). His current research is focused on surface enhanced Raman scattering and applying Raman imaging in biology and medicine. His other academic interests include the history of science in ancient, medieval India and theoretical aspects of Carnatic classical music. He is a Fulbright scholar and was a member of the national core committee of INYAS, a body of INSA. He has been the chairman of the Karnataka State committee for the position paper on Knowledge of India, Also a member of the research council of the history of science, INSA.
