Frippertronics with any DAW! Ableton Live or the Boss RC-600 Looper!

In this video I’m going to talk about “Frippertronics”, a tape technique first popularised by Robert Fripp and Brian Eno in the 1970s which allows you to “overdub” your playing and build up complex soundscapes. It is based upon the earlier tape experiments of Terry Riley and Pauline Oliveros - the “Time Lag Accumulator”.

I will explain what Frippertronics is and how it works with two reel-to-reel tape decks. I’ll then compare it with other tape looping techniques. And then I will show how you can achieve similar results with any DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) such as Ableton Live and the simple built in delay plugins.

I’ll also describe a way of setting up the Boss RC-600 Loop Station to do the same thing which I first learnt about in this video:

Then I’ll end the video with a live performance using my Yamaha Pacifica guitar and Ableton Live.
