This right here, alongside the new recording for the next show (1980-02-13) stems from a lead I started chasing down over 3½ years ago, in the Spring of 2022. I reached out to Beerman, who had these first generation tapes lying around, given to him by Reinhardt (Rhino) who attended the last two of seven L.A. 1980 shows with Beerman, while he himself saw all seven. On the 12th, Beerman sat SEC B, ROW 24, SEAT 12, dead center of the stage. That means that this recording was done in the very best spot of the arena. With Beerman's reluctance to ship the tapes, it was a lot of back-and-forth with suggestions on getting these transferred, and eventually, we got JEMS onboard, who was not only open to transferring these for us, but making the drive up north to pick up the tapes and bring them back home for transferring. He absolutely did not have to do this, but he wanted to in order to preserve the tapes and the history. It was a lot of work getting to this point, and we thank JEMS for his heroic efforts in helping us acquiring and transferring these!
When I got hold of the raw transfers for these new tapes, knowing it was on the same deck as Oakland, I hit play, and sure enough, it sounded just like Oakland. I could not believe what I was hearing; this was the last show of the tour that was stuck as a truly "UN-LISTENABLE" recording. It was the worst "best" recording we had from the tour in public circulation. To hear it go from the worst, to one of the absolute best, was a moment I will never forget. This, to me, is one of the best shows of the tour, and I think it has some of David's absolute best Wall live solos (especially Hey You and Comfortably Numb). Hearing them in this quality fills me with so much joy every time. I also think it is the best "Almost Gone" jam! More on the tapes: the reason that this recording is missing "In The Flesh?" at the start is due to the fact that Reinhardt got past security a bit too late. As it stands, it is the only song from this show that remains stuck in an un-listenable state.
This is best listened to LOUD!
I'm 100% sure this recording exists in some capacity in the trading circles, and this may not be new for everybody. But for myself and the general community, this is one of the absolute biggest upgrades I think we will ever see.
The tapes, while incredible, were not without their problems. In the original 12th recording, the right channel lacked volume and depth. Our good friend Davide Capolongo spent many days manually fixing this problem, adding just enough parallel compression and balancing every half minute or so, ensuring that this is an enjoyable, true stereo experience. This was no easy task, and we give Davide our biggest round of applause for helping us out with this. Also applied was the usual; speed, EQ, the works. The 13th needed less work than this, thankfully!
Taped by Reinhardt "Rhino" Hohlwein. / Shared with us by Michael "Beerman" / Transferred by JEMS (June 2025) / Remastered by Davide Capolongo (Summer 2025) / Liberation by The Pink Floyd Research Group (October 2025)
Share freely with everybody; do not convert to lossy formats; DO NOT SELL!
Shine on, everybody!
