LAKE TAHOE SHORELINE PADDLE (72 miles)
Day 8—Meeks Bay to Kaspian Campground (6.8 miles)
On day 8, we started the day with a wonderful camp breakfast (thanks to Sarah) and then me learning about the bear-chasing heroism my wife displayed the night before while I was fast asleep.
Then we packed up our kayaks and pushed off for our penultimate destination—Kaspian Campground. The day was beautiful and the water on this section of the lake was a stunning aqua/emerald blue.
Toward the end of our paddle, we paddled right past Homewood Ski Resort, which was really cool to see in the summer—the main run being only a grass hill which basically descends straight into the lake.
Upon reaching the Kaspian area, we paddled around to find an inlet where we could shore our kayak and then tied them together around a large tree. We had a quick snack on a park bench, got our bearings, and then set off on a short hike to find the campground—which was directly uphill from where we landed. The camp host directed us to our campsite, which was one of the best spots in the whole campground: spacious, far back into the forest and away from the parking lot, but also directly across from the lake. Sherry and I then began ferrying our gear and food from the kayaks back to the campsite. On our second trip, Uncle David Lister showed up with his own kayaks. On our third trip, AJ and Sarah and the kids showed up as well!
After getting the camp set up, Sherry and I then set out for a short hike up to Eagle Rock—which was only ¼ mile from our campground (which even contained an unmarked “short cut” which essentially led directly back to our campground). This short hike did not disappoint, which led to the top of a 500 ft point which hangs over Highway 89 and gives a near 360-degree perspective of the lake. (In the video, I’m able to view every major peak within Lake Tahoe.)
After taking some pictures and video from the summit of Eagle Rock, we then hiked back to camp and enjoyed the rest of the day with family and friends. As the sun started getting lower in the afternoon, we bought some wood and made a roaring campfire, which we maintained until long after the sun had set. We had an amazing camp dinner (thanks again to Sarah), and spent the rest of the night sharing stories and laughing. Eventually, when the fire started to burn out, we all went to bed.
This would be the LAST NIGHT of our trip. The next morning was our final day, when we would complete our 72-mile paddle, return home, and see our little daughter…
