Presented by Philipp Springer, DK6SP at Hamvention 2025.
The presenter shared an in-depth look at the V73WW DXpedition to the Marshall Islands, a high-intensity amateur radio project aimed at reaching 100,000 QSOs during peak sunspot conditions. The team, composed of young operators averaging 28 years old, executed the operation over 12 days in February 2025. Traveling from Europe to the remote Majuro Atoll, they transported all equipment themselves, including antennas, radios, and amplifiers. Their goal was ambitious: operate across all HF bands (160 through 6 meters), using CW, SSB, FT8, and RTTY, while staying active 24/7 with six operating positions on a remote private island.
Despite challenges like vegetation, humidity, and internet issues, the team established an efficient station layout using vertical dipole arrays and beach-mounted antennas, maximizing performance on low bands. All equipment was tested and prepared in advance, with careful logistical coordination. Ultimately, the team surpassed their goal, achieving 103,857 QSOs with over 23,000 unique callsigns, all while providing live updates, daily LoTW uploads, and full transparency with sponsors and the amateur radio community. The success was a product of careful planning, youthful energy, and strong support from global donors and clubs.
