sugar feeding for bees
winter beekeeping tips
If you want your hives to make it through the winter safely, the first thing you need is an adequate winter food supply.
Here’s an easy and effective way to feed your hives during the winter.
Using powdered sugar can be an effective way to feed bees during the winter.
Sugar serves as a great food source for bees. Additionally, powdered sugar is excellent at absorbing moisture. Since bees leave the hive less frequently in winter, moisture tends to accumulate more inside. Excessive moisture in the hive can lead to fungal growth and mold, which in turn can cause digestive issues for bees, such as Nosema. Nosema is one of the main causes of colony loss during the winter months.
By absorbing moisture, powdered sugar helps reduce this problem. Placing powdered sugar above the bee cluster also keeps the area warmer, making it easier and quicker for bees to access food.
On average, a hive with 7 to 10 frames will need between 1 and 1.5 kilograms of sugar per week.
