In this video I show how Lorentz transformations can be applied to the four velocity (that we discussed previously). This will further deepen the physical realisation of the transformation as being between observers moving with relative coordinate velocities, as we will show by boosting from a stationary to a moving frame.
I then talk about how we can use our familiar trick that the four velocity is normalised in order to obtain a new equation (one which we will see frequently occurring) and use this to produce the Lorentz factor - I then show how we can re-write the Lorentz boost matrix (from it's hyperbolic rotation form with cosh psi etc) to a much simpler form using the Lorentz factor. I will discuss this form in more detail in the next video where we again check it is a Lorentz transformation. This way of writing the Lorentz boost is much more commonly used in calculations as it has a much simpler written form, however it does also allow us to easily derive some significant equations that I will discuss in the next video.
