In this video, I walk through how HDMI recording has evolved on the Canon EOS R5 Mark II, and how it compares to the original R5. While most of the changes are minor—mainly involving menu organization—Canon has added a few key functions that make HDMI output more flexible.
I start by showing where key HDMI settings have moved in the menu system. Options like HDMI Resolution, HDMI Display, and Standby: Low Res have been relocated to more logical sections, making them easier to find. Beyond that, Canon added a new 1080i output mode, useful in broadcast workflows or with external recorders like the Atomos Ninja, where interlaced output combined with pulldown can reduce bitrates.
Next, I cover the new HDMI output range for Canon Log, which lets you choose between full and narrow range output. This setting allows better compatibility with workflows that expect broadcast-legal signals, though it reduces dynamic range. I explain when you might want to use it—and why you generally shouldn’t unless absolutely necessary.
One of the biggest fixes Canon made is that Cinema Gamut now passes correctly over HDMI when using Canon Log 3. On the original R5, Log output was limited to BT.2020, but with the Mark II, external monitors and recorders now receive the full Cinema Gamut color space. This means consistent color between internal and external recordings—something professionals have been asking for.
Finally, I discuss the outstanding question: recording time. Compared to the R5 the R5 mark 2 has shorter external record times with the standard overheating protection. Even with the same temperature conditions, the R5 Mark II runs significantly shorter than the R5 during external recording. For longer sessions, enabling High temperature mode or using Canon’s CF-R20EP cooling base are almost necessary. Overall, HDMI recording on the R5 Mark II is more flexible but not dramatically different—ideal for specific workflows, especially live monitoring and streaming, where color and gamma accuracy matter most.
