Afghanistan in the 1970s was a very different place to what it has become today after the invasions by both America and the Soviet Union.
After graduating in Journalism from Darlington College of Technology, I postponed joining a newspaper to travel overland from England to Afghanistan via Turkey and Iran - by train.
Afghanistan in 1976 was already being pressured to "modernize" in what was then the latest chapter of the "Great Game" - the competition between Britain and the West and the Russians (Soviets) for effective control of this landlocked but strategically positioned country.
My travels by bus throughout the country was wonderful and I met many welcoming people.
