Extreme heat events in 2021 have highlighted the need for rigorous preparedness and adaptation measures. The associations between heat and health are well established, but solutions are lacking. To address this gap between research and practice, many cities are dedicating personnel and funding to heat preparedness, appointing heat officers, and naming heat waves. We will hear from three current and former government officials with frontline insights into this transition. What does local heat adaptation look like in Phoenix, New York, and the State of California? How can local policy protect vulnerable groups? How can researchers support and engage with city governments on local climate challenges? What knowledge gaps exist? Join the BU School of Public Health Program on Climate and Health, the Initiative on Cities, and the URBAN Program, as we discuss these questions and learn how to best bridge the gap between research and policy, using extreme heat as a case study.
In this excerpt, Daphne Lundi, Deputy Director for Social Resiliency at the NYC Mayor’s Office of Resiliency, discusses timescales for combating extreme heat.
