New Freshwater Fisheries at Dasobiligo to Boost Bolga’s Local Economy: Catfish and Tilapia.
A new fisheries project has opened at Dasobiligo, drawing fresh water from the nearby dam to supply Bolgatanga and the Upper East Region with locally farmed fish. The facility, now the largest in the region, produces a steady supply of tilapia, catfish, and other freshwater species.
This marks a major shift in the region’s fish market, which has long relied on imported frozen fish that may be stored for years before reaching Bolga. With the new Dasobiligo fisheries, retailers and restaurants can now access freshly harvested fish within hours, cutting transport costs and improving quality.
The project is expected to create jobs for youth in fish farming, processing, and distribution while promoting sustainable aquaculture practices. Many local traders believe it could spark a new wave of agribusiness growth in the region.
