Pear Rust: Treatment Ideas

Here I examine the cycle of pear rust, a fungal infection which affects pear trees, but also overwinters in Junipers. This fungus has been very problematic for me and reduced my crop yields of pears down to zero on some trees. I look at possible improvements to tree immunity and because I am unable to remove Junipers in the vicinity I have to develop a permanent treatment program each year which I start at the first signs of pear rust in early summer! I share a few ideas and invite you to take part in trialing some of my ideas.

UPDATE - RESULTS
My results have been inconclusive as to which is the best treatment because since using them, whether it be aspirin or the "cocktail" of essential oils, bicarb and washing up liquid, my trees have certainly improved (though last year was a disaster - down to late frosts - not pear rust). The disease has not been eliminated but I certainly get less pear rust. Both of my treatments seem to have given pretty much the same results. Of course, the change in our weather may have also contributed to the improvement, too. So, to me, there is no real difference as to which treatment is the best so I continue to do a mix and hope for the best. I do feel though, that the sprays have helped as there is far less pear rust, and yields are much better, given that before I used the treatments, most leaves were infected with the fungus and the crops were almost non-existent! Remember to treat at the first signs of pear rust and it will take till the next year for results to show, because you are tackling the tree's immunity and helping to give it a boost. Continued use at the first signs of the rust is essential, in my opinion. Certainly, no damage has occurred with the treatments!
