Hello everyone, and welcome to a different sort of one-off feature for Stretto Starritt Stories with "Schubert Saturday"!!! You may have heard of Schubert's set of impromptus, but did you also know that there are two versions of his 3rd impromptu from the first set??? I'll tell you the reason at the end of my blurb. This is the emotional middle section revealing the melody in the little finger with the arpeggiated accompaniment underneath all in the right hand. On the standard keyboard I feel as though I have to control every part so I have to be very conscious about both my movement and the musical direction at the same time. On the narrow keyboard I feel free in the flow so I can let the music speak for itself rather than consciously doing anything. Interpretation is about flow, not just accuracy, accuracy is the preparation part of it but it should not be thought about so much in performance.
Here is the interesting part: Schubert originally wrote this in G flat major but amateurs thought that it would be too difficult to play, so Schubert's publishers decided to transpose it up a semitone to G major with one sharp as oppose to six flats. Well ... the irony is that it may be easy to read but it's not as natural physically and it has a different character. Here are the two excerpts on the standard keyboard and the narrow keyboard feature will be in a separate post.
