On 26 March 1998, Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, 15-year-old Prince William and 13-year-old Prince Harry went skiing at Whistler Ski Resort in Canada. The Prince of Wales requested the press leave him and his sons alone for two days during their ski trip, the holiday coming just months after the death of William and Harry's mother, Princess Diana, on 31 August 1997. In return, Prince Charles agreed to a brief photoshoot and press conference at the beginning of their first day on the slopes. Before arriving in Whistler, the three princes spent time in Vancouver, where the phenomenon of "Willmania" became apparent, the 15-year-old Prince William acquiriing heartthrob status in the eyes of thousands of Canadian teenagers.
