Psalm 22: The Song of the Cross and the Messiah's Triumph (Audio Bible)

Psalm 22 is one of the most profound and sacred chapters in the entire Bible. It is often called "The Song of the Cross" because it provides a vivid, first-person account of the sufferings of Christ and the glory that followed, written by King David nearly 1,000 years before the crucifixion.

While David wrote this during a time of great personal distress, the Spirit of Prophecy carried his words far beyond his own experience. This psalm is the clearest Old Testament window into the heart and mind of Jesus during His passion.

1. The Humiliation of the Messiah (vv. 1–21)
This section mirrors the darkest hours of the crucifixion, where David acts as a "type" or figure of Christ:

The Cry of Desertion: The psalm opens with the haunting words Jesus cried from the cross: “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

Trust Amidst Agony: Even in deep humiliation, the speaker mixes his complaints with comfort, remembering God’s faithfulness to the fathers and His holy nature.

Graphic Prophecy: The details are startlingly accurate - the mocking of the crowds, the intense physical thirst, the piercing of hands and feet, and the casting of lots for His garments.

A Plea for Help: Amidst the "bulls of Bashan" and "dogs" (his enemies), the Messiah cries out for God to be near and to deliver His soul.

2. The Exaltation and Eternal Kingdom (vv. 22–31)
The tone shifts dramatically from a cry of agony to a shout of victory! The suffering leads directly to a global, eternal impact:

A Declaration of Praise: Because God heard His cry, the Messiah declares God’s name to His brethren and the great congregation.

A Global Harvest: The prophecy expands to reveal that all the ends of the world shall remember and turn to the LORD.

An Enduring Legacy: This kingdom will be preached to future generations, declaring that "He hath done this" - a phrase mirroring Christ's final victory cry, "It is finished."
