June 6th, nineteen forty-four. Juno Beach, Normandy, France. The cold ocean spray hit the faces of fourteen thousand Canadian soldiers as their landing craft bobbed in ten-foot waves. It was seven forty-five in the morning. Through the thick fog and smoke, they could see the gray concrete bunkers of Hitler's Atlantic Wall. German machine guns were already firing. Tracer bullets lit up the morning sky like deadly fireflies. The Canadians were about to hit the most heavily defended beach of the entire D-Day invasion.
