Fadli Zon’s Speech on the Opening of the Parliamentary Meeting at the Occasion of the 10th World Water Forum (WWF) in Bali highlighted the current water crisis which impact people living in all parts of the world, including those in Africa, South Asia, Latin America, Asia Pacific, and most importantly in Gaza City and Rafah, as well as the rest of occupied territories. Water crisis has also brought significant impacts to our global health, social, economy, and environment.
He further stated that today, as almost 3.5 billion people do not have access to safe sanitation and one in two globally suffer from water scarcity, cooperation is therefore critical, not only to ensure the inclusive and sustainable access to safe and clean water, but also to integrate all efforts for building resilience and water security.
In this opportunity, Dr. Fadli also emphasized that since water issue is a political issue, it requires political action and political will, to respect, protect, and fulfil the rights of water and sanitation for everyone. Taking the recent multidimensional humanitarian catastrophe in the Southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah into account, he added that civilians populations have no access to safe drinking water and clean sanitation as they are both being destroyed and contaminated by Israel’s missiles and bombs dropped, and the remaining water pipeline are blockaded by Israel. Even worse, Israel has prohibited Palestinians, especially those living in the West Bank, to gather rainwater for domestic and agricultural needs, saying it is illegal as it is deemed Israel’s property. This is insane, and an act of using water as a weapon of war could never be justified.
He urged member of parliaments attending this forum to strengthen collective responsibility for stopping this act of genocide – because Palestinians live matter, so do the live of people in Europe, Asia, Africa, Latin America, and all parts of the world.
Besides, Dr. Fadli also emphasized that parliaments, as the representative of people, have the responsibility, not only to ensure the rights of water for all, including women and girls and marginalized groups, but also to empower people and communities to have control over their lives, by increasing their involvement and participation to shape sustainable water solutions - putting the examples of Balinese Subak irrigation system and West Java’s bamboo conservation showing local wisdom and practice in preserving water.
In the closing statement, he stated that parliaments and parliamentarians must step up efforts, to foster collective action and collaboration on harnessing the power of water since cooperation on water could create positive ripple effects fostering harmony, generating prosperity, and building resilience to the global challenges in a world full of uncertainty, today and in the future.
