As you all know the divine plays of Lord Krishna are truly wondrous. He was very playful and mischievous by nature. He not only protected His devotees but also, at times, lovingly troubled them. Yet even in those moments, some hidden benefit for the devotee was always present. One such story is related to Lord Krishna in His form as Lord Jagannath.

Near the Singhadwara (Lion Gate) of Jagannath Puri lived His great devotee madhav das, who was also the spiritual guru of the king of that region. Lord Jagannath used to visit Raghu Das in the form of a child. There was a bond of friendship between them, which was well known to everyone. One day, Lord Jagannath came to madhav das and said, “The king has such a huge jackfruit garden, yet he never offers jackfruit to Me. I want to eat ripe jackfruit. Come, let us steal jackfruit from the king’s garden today.”

Madhav Das replied, “I will tell the king about Your wish and bring jackfruit for You. Tomorrow, You will surely receive jackfruit as an offering.” Hearing this, the Lord said, “You know very well that Mother Yashoda never lacked butter, yet I used to steal butter all over Gokul. There is a special joy in eating something that is stolen. Come, tonight we will steal jackfruit.”

That night, Madhav Das went with the Lord, quietly reaching the king’s garden. Lord Jagannath said to him, “I will stay down here. You climb the tree, pick a nice big jackfruit, and drop it down. I will catch it.” Raghu Das climbed the tree and began showing jackfruits, asking, “This one? Or this one?” The Lord asked him to pluck a large jackfruit. As soon as Madhav Das broke it and dropped it down, Lord Jagannath suddenly disappeared.

The sound of the falling jackfruit alerted the king’s guards, who immediately arrived at the spot. After seeing everything, they informed the king. The king himself came and was astonished to see his guru climbing a tree in such a manner.

When the king asked for an explanation, Madhav Das said, “I will tell you everything in private.” The king already knew about Madhav Das’s devotion and that the Lord often appeared before him. After hearing the entire incident, the king became fully convinced. He said, “I now dedicate this entire jackfruit garden to the Lord. Whenever you wish, you may offer jackfruit to Him.”

The next morning, when Madhav Das went to the seashore, the Lord appeared before him and asked playfully, “So, how was it?” Madhav Das replied, “I am fine, but last night You disappeared. We could not bring even a single jackfruit. But look, we have managed to dedicate the entire garden in Your name.”
