The 109 is part of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's network of key bus routes that operate across the MBTA's vast bus network.
The 109 in particular is a important bus route that links Harvard square and Linden square that offers connections/transfers to the MBTA, Red, Orange and Green lines, connecting at Harvard square for the Red line, Union square and east Somerville for the Green line, and Sullivan square for the Orange line and over 30 different bus routes.
The 109 was upgraded from its original status as a normal bus route to a key bus route in December of 2024 as part of the "better bus network plan composed and developed by the MBTA. This upgrade was created by extending the 109 from its previous terminal at Sullivan to its present day terminal at Harvard. With the addition of upgraded bus stops this key bus route quickly became a transit artery in the suburban sector of Boston transportation.
